Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law establishing the end date of the Leningrad Battle (August 9) as the Day of Military Glory. The document was published on the official legal information portal.
The head of state personally introduced the bill to the State Duma in March. The accompanying materials indicate that the innovation "will emphasize the military-strategic significance of the Leningrad Battle as the longest battle of the Great Patriotic War and will commemorate the feat of the defenders of Leningrad." The document comes into force on the day of its official publication.
The Leningrad Battle lasted 1,127 days (from July 10, 1941 to August 9, 1944). In different periods, six fronts, the Baltic Fleet, three flotillas, long-range aviation units and air defense forces took part in it. Not only all military branches, but also partisans contributed to the Victory. During the battle, more than 50 enemy divisions were defeated and Army Group North was crushed.
